Vegan Hot "Honey". The coolest condiment in town and ridiculously easy to make! And by hot we're not talking temperature. We're talking spicy heat, which, with the sweetness, is just the most incredible combination!
Ingredients
Here is exactly what you need to make Vegan Hot "Honey":
- Our honey sub - Yep, I know honey isn't vegan, but there's no need to miss out on this sticky, sweet deliciousness because maple syrup or vegan bee-free honey are great substitutes for honey. I love Bee-Mindful Hunnie but really love this recipe when made with maple syrup best. The smoky maple flavor works exceptionally well with the other ingredients. I used very dark maple syrup for the smokiest, richest flavor, but any grade is fine. Agave syrup will work in a pinch too.
- Red chili pepper flakes - Pantry-friendly and cheap and because they are dry it means you're hot "honey" will keep for months!
- Dried thyme - This is optional but recommended. I love the savory, herby flavor it gives the hot honey.
- Apple cider vinegar - For a little acidity. It balances the sweet and adds a little tang.
How To Make Vegan Hot "Honey"
Vegan Hot "Honey" is quick and easy to make. Simply add everything except the vinegar to a pan and heat until it comes to a very gentle simmer. It's important not to leave it any longer. Turn off, add the vinegar, stir, then leave to cool. That's it!
You can strain it if you want to but I like to leave it with the bits in. I think it looks prettier when drizzled and the flavor continues to get better while stored.
How To Use Vegan Hot Honey
Drizzle this sticky, spicy sauce over all of your favorite foods. Some ideas for things to drizzle it on include:
- Vegan Baked Pears.
- Pizza. Honestly, you haven't lived until you've drizzled hot "honey" on your pizza!
- Biscuits (it's amazing with my Vegan Sweet Potato Biscuits), warm buttery cornbread, or jalapeno corn scones.
- Vegan chicken or chick'n and waffles.
- Roasted veggies, potato wedges, and corn on the cob.
- Burgers
- Persimmon toast, avocado toast, or grilled cheese.
- Vegan cheese and charcuterie boards.
- Roasted peaches.
- With whipped vegan feta or ricotta.
- Salads. It's so good with my Peach Quinoa Salad!
- Tacos, tofu, and grilled food.
You can even add it to cocktails (helloooo spicy sweet margarita!), and salad dressings, or gift it in a nice jar with a pretty label!
Tips For Storing
Use clean, dry glass jars for storage. Any moisture could cause early spoilage. Made with dried chili peppers as per this recipe your hot "honey" will easily keep for 3 to 4 months.
If made with maple syrup store it in the fridge. If you use vegan honey I recommend storing it in the pantry or a cool cupboard instead because it will get too thick and gloopy to use if you refrigerate it.

Ingredients
- 1 cup (240 mls) maple syrup , or vegan bee-free honey
- 3 tablespoons red chili pepper flakes
- ¾ teaspoon dried thyme
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
INSTRUCTIONS
- Add the maple syrup, chili flakes, and thyme to a small saucepan and stir together.
- Place over medium heat and bring to a boil.
- Once it starts bubbling well turn off the heat.
- Add the apple cider vinegar, stir, then leave in the pan to cool a little before pouring into a jar to store. I don't strain mine. I think it looks pretty with the bits in it and I like that it gets a bit spicier with time as the chili flakes steep. You can strain it through a sieve if you prefer it with no bits.
