Charlie and Chester have personally taste-tested and approved another homemade dog cookie recipe. This time it's Sweet Potato Dog Treats!
With only three ingredients they are super easy to make, and much healthier and cheaper than store-bought dog cookies. They make a great alternative to our Peanut Butter & Banana Dog Treats.
Ingredients
Here are the 3 ingredients you need to make our Sweet Potato Dog Treat recipe:
- Sweet potato - This needs to be cooked. You can oven-bake it, steam or microwave it. This part can be done in advance when you're using the oven/steamer for something else. Store it in the fridge until you make the treats.
- Oats - These should be rolled, old-fashioned, or quick oats.
- Coconut oil - Refined or unrefined.
How To Make Sweet Potato Dog Treats
This vegan dog cookie recipe is really easy to make. Here's how:
- Process the oats into coarse flour.
- Add the sweet potato and coconut oil and process again.
- Drizzle in some water until a stiff dough forms.
- Roll out with a rolling pin, cut into cookie shapes, place on baking sheets, and bake!
Success Tip - The baking time might seem long for cookies, but they are best when really dry and hard. It makes them harder for your dog to chew and they keep longer too.
I like to use a bone shaped cookie cutter because dog bone shapes are fun, but any will do. You can even just cut the dough into squares or rectangles with a pizza cutter or knife if you don't have cookie cutters. Your pups really won't mind what shape they are!
Storing Homemade Dog Treats
Make sure the cookies have cooled completely then store them in an air-tight container at room temperature. As long as you cook them until they are very hard and dry they will easily keep for 2 months or 6 months in the freezer.

Ingredients
- 2 cups (200 grams) rolled oats or quick oats
- ½ cup (100 grams) cooked sweet potato , skin removed
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
- a few tablespoons water
RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT
INSTRUCTIONS
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a large baking tray with parchment paper.
- Add the oats to a food processor and process until they are a coarse flour-like consistency.
- Add the cooked sweet potato and the coconut oil (doesn't matter if it's hard or liquid) and process until well combined.
- Add the water 1 tablespoon at a time, pulsing a few times in between each addition, until the mixture can be squeezed into a firm, pliable dough with your fingers,
- Remove the blade, tip out the dough and knead together a bit so it's all in a big ball.
- Roll out to about 3 to 4 mm thick. I like to roll mine out on a silicone baking mat but if you don't have one you might need to sprinkle some flour on the surface to stop the dough sticking. If your dog is wheat intolerant be sure to use oat flour (just process a few more oats until they are flour).
- Cut out into cookie shapes using a cookie cutter or just cut the dough into even pieces with a knife or pizza cutter.
- Carefully transfer the cookies to the lined tray and bake in the oven for 20 - 25 minutes. Keep an eye on them towards the end as all ovens and baking trays cook differently. The cookies should be very hard and dry with slightly golden bottoms.
- Cool completely on the tray then store in an airtight container.

After all the horrible news lately re: what is not good for our 4 legged friends ( chicken necks: & supermarket brand treats) I was so happy to find a simple and safe recipe for treats for my 5 month old puppy.
He made no hesitation in trying one before it cooled down.
A Virtual Vegan says
I'm so glad he enjoyed them Marina!

My Benji loved these!

Thank you for your this recipe! I added two tbsp of flaxseed meal (and a little more sweet potato) and substituted the water with apple cider vinegar. My boy sat in the kitchen and watched the whole process. I used a bone cookie cutter and was able to stamp his initial in the middle too. They looked great and he was very excited to try his first one (it was gone in a blink!).
A Virtual Vegan says
Aaaw so glad he likes them! Love that he has his initials on them. So cute!

My dogs love sweet potatoes for a snack, I have wanted to make them dog treats made with sweet potatoes instead of buying them already made which are so expensive. I will try these and let you know how they turn out. Also I have a dehydrator any ideas for it! Thanks
A Virtual Vegan says
I hope your dogs enjoy them! I have never used a dehydrator but I bet you could cut thick slices of sweet potato and dehydrate them so they are really tough and chewy. Apple slices too. I have done it in the oven but I bet the dehydrator would do a better job!
Kimmie says
I do sweet potatoes in dehydrator weekly for my pup, they’re her favorite treat! I cut them about 1/4”, and then depending on width of the potato (I live in ththe south and we get big sweet potatoes down here!) , I cut the slices in half. My dog likes hem chewy so I start checking after about 6 hours, then it’s just to your dog’s liking of chewy, crisp, or in between! And of course u can cut how vet u want, but I find the 1/4” thickness works best regardless of if sliced lengthwise, width wise etc!

My chocolate lab ended up having a blood clot on her spine and I feel absolutely terrible having to force her to take her medication! So I made these, didn't have normal oatmeal so I used some baked apple instant oatmeal and she loves it! I poke a hole in the treat, put her treat in and she'll gobble it all down. Thank you!
A Virtual Vegan says
Aaaww the poor thing. Having had 2 blood clots in my leg this year I can really sympathize with her. They are incredibly painful. I'm so glad my treats are helping and I hope she makes a full recovery soon!
Dedria says
Are these treats crunchy or chewy? Can I use olive oil instead of coconut oil?
A Virtual Vegan says
They turn out pretty hard. Not chewy at all. I have never tried them with olive oil. I would imagine it would work ok although the quantity might need to be adjusted a little. In my experience though dogs aren't as keen on the taste of olive oil as they are coconut oil so that's something to consider.

Made a batch of these for our three grown dogs and the litter of 5 week old puppies currently staying in my dining room. Everyone loves them and I love that I know that puppy's first treats are healthy and safe.
A Virtual Vegan says
Aaaww that's lovely! I'm so glad they were a hit. Thank you for letting me know!
Vannia says
How long do these cookies keep? How can I store them?
Patty says
I have a new little fur baby and this is the first try and making treats for her.

Waiting for puppy to wake up and try them.

ON my fifth batch of these! Made them for my dog ans my sisters dog. They both LOVE them! Now a weekly thing for me to make them. Thank you so much for posting this recipe.
Sophie says
My dog is allergic to flax, oats and rice...What can i use in place of oats? Thanks
A Virtual Vegan says
I haven't tried them with anything other than oats but I am sure that as long as you stick to the same quantity (180g), any flour would work. You might just need a little more or less water as the absorbency will be slightly different. Good luck!
Linda ellington says
So easy to make..my dog Tule n her sistet Finley loves loves loves them!!!
A Virtual Vegan says
That's great Linda! I am so glad they are enjoying them.
Caryann says
Do you bake them? If so how high on preheating oven and for how long to cook them?
A Virtual Vegan says
All of the cooking instructions are given above in the recipe.

I just made these for my lab and beagle mix. I usually give them dehydrated sweet potato chews, but since this recipe didn't call for flour (which I don't like feeding to my dogs) I decided to give them a try. My dogs went NUTS over them! I made a big batch in Halloween shapes to last us through fall. Thank you for the recipe!!!
Aimee / Wallflower Kitchen says
My dog Molly went crazy for these! I halved the ingredients because I don't give her treats very often and didn't want any to go to waste. They were super easy to make and smell oddly amazing! Molly says thanks :-)
Michelle says
What temperature do you bake them at??
Thank you, can't wait to make them ????
