Vegan Pizza Sauce is straightforward to make at home and takes no more than 5 minutes from start to finish.
It's hearty, thick, and rich with bold flavor and it's super quick and easy to make with no simmering.
Ingredients
To make Vegan Pizza Sauce you will need these pantry staples:
And some ingredient notes:
- Tomato paste - Thickens the sauce so we don't need to simmer it, and it adds deep, concentrated, tomato flavor.
- Crushed tomatoes - You could also use canned tomato sauce, or blend up canned whole tomatoes or fresh tomatoes. Just be sure to use the correct amount.
- Garlic & onion powder - Better than fresh for this recipe because it is uncooked.
- Dried herbs - If you don't have basil or oregano you could use more Italian seasoning or dried parsley, marjoram, thyme or rosemary. I prefer dried herbs in this sauce for a more concentrated flavor, but you can use fresh herbs if you prefer.
- Sugar - Just a touch. This is optional but recommended. It enhances the tomato flavor and helps balance the acidity.
- Red pepper flakes - These are optional too. If you prefer no heat in your pizza or are making it for children's pizza you can omit them.
How To Make Vegan Pizza Sauce
It's as simple as stirring everything together. You don't need a food processor or blender, although a whisk helps make the mixing easier because of the somewhat gloopy tomato paste.
Once it's all mixed up, give it a quick taste to check the seasonings and adjust them as necessary. No cooking is required because the sauce is cooked when you bake your pizza!
This recipe makes 2¾ cups (660ml) of pizza sauce. Enough for about 5 medium pizzas depending on how much you decide to slather on. If you have leftovers don't worry because it freezes well for next time.
How To Use Pizza Sauce
Vegan Pizza Sauce is perfect for pizza nights! Spread on the pizza crust before adding vegan cheeses like mozzarella, vegan ricotta and vegan parmesan, veggies, pesto, and other toppings. Whatever you like on your favorite vegan pizza!
You can also use the sauce as a flavorsome dip for no-knead focaccia, breadsticks, or cheesy pull-apart bread.
Don't add too much sauce to the top of your pizza dough. You want the amazing flavor but don't want to use so much it makes the crust soggy.
Storing Homemade Pizza Sauce
Pizza sauce is a great recipe for making ahead. It keeps well for up to 10 days in the fridge or the freezer for up to 3 months.
I recommend freezing the sauce in one pizza-sized portions, then you can remove them as needed without defrosting the entire batch.
When decanting into containers leave room at the top of each container for the sauce to expand as it freezes.
Recipe
Easy Vegan Pizza Sauce
Author:Ingredients
- ¾ cup (12 tablespoons) tomato paste , equivalent to 1 x 5½ to 6oz can (use tomato puree in the UK)
- 1¾ cups (420 mls) crushed tomatoes , or tomato sauce (use passata in the UK)
- 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning , (mixed herbs in the UK)
- 1 tablespoon dried basil
- 1 tablespoon dried oregano
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
- 2 teaspoons sugar , optional but recommended
- OPTIONAL ¼ teaspoon chili flakes , omit or add more or less to suit your tastes
INSTRUCTIONS
- Add all of the ingredients to a mixing bowl. Stir or whisk together really well to combine into a thick sauce. You will need to mash up the tomato paste with the spoon or whisk when you start off so it breaks up and mixes in.
- Give it a quick taste to check the seasoning and add more salt and pepper as necessary. It will taste very concentrated but don't worry as once it is spread on the pizza and cooks it will be perfect.
- Transfer to airtight containers and refrigerate for up to 10 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
